On 14 February 2024, we received following comments/suggestion from Ministry of Commerce, Industry Investment promotion, Oman on the proposal:-

1) Under the monetary policy of the Central Bank of Oman, which is linked to a fixed exchange rate system with the United States dollar, the United States dollar constitutes the largest share of the foreign reserves of the Central Bank of Oman and therefore there is currently little room or flexibility to accommodate the concept of "International trade settlement in Indian rupees".

2) The use of funds in the INR vostro account for bank operating in the Sultanate of Oman continues to be restricted for the purpose of solving commercial exchanges and investment payments only. We therefore therefore recommend that the use of this account be expanded by including Indian rupee remittance transactions by expatriate workers in the Sultanate of Oman.

Further, it may also be noted that vostro accounts can be used for remittance transactions of expatriate workers in accordance with mutual agreement between banks.

RBI has also requested for a virtual meeting with CBO to discuss the possible modalities of Special Rupee Vostro Account mechanism and other related issues.
